Poker Hand Rankings

Guide to Poker Hand Rankings

Royal Flush:
The best and highest hand in poker - it can't be beaten. A Royal flush is the five highest cards in a poker deck all in the same suit
Example: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, & Ten of Hearts (A-K-Q-J-10 H).

Straight Flush:
The Straight Flush is five cards of the same suit in order
Example: 7-8-9-10-J of Spades

Four Of A Kind:
A Four of a Kind is four cards all of the same number
Example: 10-10-10-10 OR A-A-A-A
The higher rank always wins. For example, 3-3-3-3 will beat 2-2-2-2.

Full House:
A Full House consists of a three of a kind and a pair.
Example: Q-Q-Q-4-4.
If more than one player has a full house, the player with the higher 3-of-a-kind would win, regardless of the strength of the pair.

Flush:
A Flush is 5 cards of the same suit.
Example: 2-4-6-10-J of clubs.
If more than one player has a flush, the highest card rank will win - e.g. the player with an Ace High flush will beat a Jack high flush.

Straight:
A Straight consists of five cards in order.
Example: 2-3-4-5-6.
For a Straight, an Ace can count for high or low (e.g. A-2-3-4-5 or 10- J-Q-K-A). If 2 players have a straight, the higher straight will always beat a lower one. In the case of a tie (2 straights of different suits) the pot will be split.

Three Of A Kind:
Three of the Kind is simply 3 cards of any rank with the remaining 2 cards different
Example: A-A-A and the remaining 2 cards are unrelated
The higher Three of a Kind would always beat a lower one.

Two Pair:
Two Pairs are 2 independent pairs with the final card being unrelated.
Example: 2-2 AND Q-Q
As before, the hand with the higher pair win. In the case of the tie (that is, 2 players getting identical two pairs), the fifth card comes into play. Known as the 'Kicker' the player with the highest fifth card would win the pot.

One Pair:
One pair with 3 unrelated cards
Example: 6-6 OR Q-Q
One pair with three other separate cards. In the case of a tie, the player with the kicker (high card) would win

High Card:
The highest card of the hand
Example: the player with an Ace in their hand would beat the player with a Jack.
